4 Pratt, Francis Ashbury
[br]b. 15 February 1827 Woodstock, Vermont, USAd. 10 February 1902 Hartford, Connecticut, USA[br]American mechanical engineer and machine-tool manufacturer.[br]Francis A.Pratt served an apprenticeship as a machinist with Warren Aldrich, and on completing it in 1848 he entered the Gloucester Machine Works as a journeyman machinist. From 1852 to 1854 he worked at the Colt Armory in Hartford, Connecticut, where he met his future partner, Amos Whitney. He then became Superintendent of the Phoenix Iron Works, also at Hartford and run by George S.Lincoln \& Company. While there he designed the well-known "Lincoln" miller, which was first produced in 1855. This was a development of the milling machine built by Robbins \& Lawrence and designed by F.W. Howe, and incorporated a screw drive for the table instead of the rack and pinion used in the earlier machine.Whitney also moved to the Phoenix Iron Works, and in 1860 the two men started in a small way doing machine work on their own account. In 1862 they took a third partner, Monroe Stannard, and enlarged their workshop. The business continued to expand, but Pratt and Whitney remained at the Phoenix Iron Works until 1864 and in the following year they built their first new factory. The Pratt \& Whitney Company was incorporated in 1869 with a capital of $350,000, F.A.Pratt being elected President. The firm specialized in making machine tools and tools particularly for the armament industry. In the 1870s Pratt made no less than ten trips to Europe gaining orders for equipping armouries in many different countries. Pratt \& Whitney was one of the leading firms developing the system of interchangeable manufacture which led to the need to establish national standards of measurement. The Rogers-Bond Comparator, developed with the backing of Pratt \& Whitney, played an important part in the establishment of these standards, which formed the basis of the gauges of many various types made by the firm. Pratt remained President of the company until 1898, after which he served as their Consulting Engineer for a short time before retiring from professional life. He was granted a number of patents relating to machine tools. He was a founder member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers in 1880 and was elected a vice-president in 1881. [br]b. 3 March 1825 Leeds, Englandd. 14 March 1903 Hampstead, London, England[br]English mechanical engineer, designer of the locomotive Jenny Lind and of Joy's valve gear for steam engines.[br]By the mid-1840s Joy was Chief Draughtsman at E.B.Wilson's locomotive works at Leeds. During that period, attempts by engineers to design ever larger and more powerful locomotives were producing ungainly types, such as the long-boiler and the Cramp ton, which were to prove blind alleys in locomotive development. Joy rediscovered the proper route with his Jenny Lind 2–2–2, built in 1847. His locomotive had minimal overhang, with the firebox between the driving and trailing axles; the driving axle supported inside frames which stopped short at the firebox, allowing the latter to be wide, while leading and trailing wheels were held by outside plate frames which had a degree of elasticity. The boiler was low-pitched, the steam pressure high at 120 psi (8.4 kg/cm2). The result was a powerful locomotive which rode well and immediately became popular, a forerunner of many later designs. Joy subsequently had a varied career with successive railways and engineering firms. In the late 1850s he invented steam reversing gear for large, marine steam engines, a hydraulic organ blower and a pneumatic hammer. In 1879 he invented his radial valve gear for steam engines, which was adopted by F.W. SUBJECT AREA: Architecture and building[br]b. 3 August 1811 Halifax, Vermont, USAd. 8 April 1861 Yonkers, New York, USA[br]American mechanic and inventor of the safety passenger elevator.[br]Otis was educated in public schools and worked in a variety of jobs in the trucking and construction industries as well as in a machine shop, a carriage makers, a grist mill, and a saw mill and in a bedstead factory. It was when supervisor of construction of a new bedstead factory at Yonkers in 1852 that he developed the innovative safety features of an elevator that was to be the foundation of his later success. If the ropes or cables of a hoist should break, springs would force pawls on the lift cage to engage the ratcheted guide rails fitted into the sides of the shaft and so stop the lift. In 1853 he was planning to leave his job to join the California Gold Rush but representatives of two New York City firms who had seen his Safety Elevator and were impressed with the safety devices requested that he make them replicas. He purchased space in the Yonkers plant and began manufacture of the lifts. Demand was small at first until in 1854 he exhibited at the American Institute Fair in New York City with an impressive performance. Standing on top of the lift cage, he ordered the rope supporting it to be cut. The safety pawls engaged and the cage stopped its downward movement. From then on orders gradually increased and in 1857 he installed the first safety lift for passengers in the Haughtwout Store in New York City. The invention immediately became popular and started a revolution in architecture and the construction industry, leading to the design and building of skyscrapers, as previously buildings were limited to six or seven storeys, because of the stairs people had to climb. Otis patented several other devices, the most important of which was for a steam elevator which established the future of the Otis Elevator Company.
